Gardening

One thing I've always wanted to do well is gardening.  I haven't achieved that goal.  I jumped at the opportunity to take an early out from teaching Music for Berkeley County Schools in WV.  It was my plan, after all;  I never intended to stay in the profession for nearly as long as I had. Anyways, this is the first year that I havent been the last person in the EP to get anything planted.

I stopped by the hardware store in Martinsburg.  I wanted a couple packs of flower seeds.  I saw a lady buying seeds and I spoke to her.  "I have always wanted to have a garden, but the deer eat everything."  She proceeded to offer me a wealth of folklore, the teachings of the land.  A cornucopia of mountain wisdom.  My takeaway:  She tells me she's had a garden for 30 years.  "I used to fight the deer."

But you hang a couple pie pans; like from Weis Market.  The light reflecting keeps them away. Then you pee around the garden.  And you put hair; like from your hairbrush around the garden.  The deer don't like that human smell.  Yeah, just pee around the garden.  I always tell the grandkids where to pee.

So there you have it.  No point going to the trouble of putting up a fence.  I was so appreciative to gather this wealth of knowledge from a friendly grandma.  I love the wisdom I pick up in WV's EP.   The folk are so generous with it.
